Reading Richard Matheson means knowing an author different from many others. A sort of pioneer of science fiction, in the sense that he seems to want to explore the unusual, the incredible, this is at least the feeling I had after reading some of his works, so original, funny, even disturbing. I like Matheson's originality, without a doubt, but also the courage to dare, to field characters so out of the ordinary, to deal with apparently impossible stories, but still with a background of well-defined and full-bodied credibility.
Why I chose to read Matheson By chance, as usual after Phone Number Data seeing a film inspired by one of his novels, I Am Legend . From that moment I understood that Matheson was an author to read, to continue exploring. I chose Richard Matheson because he is able to convey the inevitability and drama, but also the desperation, of the characters. With just a few strokes he is able to focus the reader's attention on the key point of the story. Matheson manages to create a scene with few words, he is not the writer of great descriptions, he does not get lost in useless details, but gets to the point and amazes the reader.
The first novel read by Richard Matheson As I mentioned, it is I am Legend , which I also talked about in the Literature and cinema column. This story convinced me to buy other works by Matheson, such as I am Helen Driscoll – yet to be read – Three Millimeters a Day – an unforgettable yet disturbing novel – and The Best Stories – also a must read. Matheson is one of those writers capable of seeing beyond, of discovering hidden sides, of bringing out fears, desperation, dangers where others would see nothing.
